Welcome to the HNEE Language Centre

Language skills are key competences for studying and working. With high-quality language training, the Language Centre supports students in their development in an increasingly international educational landscape and working world.

In addition to students, HNEE staff, alumni and guests are also very welcome - please contact us to enquire about opportunities!

Our range of languages

Our wide range of courses is developed in close cooperation with the university's degree programmes and includes general and specialist language modules. All language modules are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Depending on the needs of the degree programmes and the requirements of the professional world, we design our courses with a focus on practical and communicative language training. In addition to curricular elective modules, it is also possible to take elective modules and courses that specifically promote intercultural skills or prepare students for the TOEIC language test, for example. Some modules are offered consecutively to ensure continuity and progress.

Registration and cancellation: Modules and courses

Students select modules and courses themselves during the selection phases via "My EMMA". It is best to select your desired module or course early in order to secure a place, as capacities are limited.

If you have missed a selection phase or are experiencing technical problems, please contact us: sprachenzentrum(at)hnee.de

If you would like to register as a listener (participation without examination performance), please also contact us.

Module selections are binding; it is not possible to deregister via the Language Centre. In urgent exceptional cases that require deregistration, please contact the examination committee responsible for your degree programme.

Registration and deregistration: Examinations

You must register for examinations in good time via"My EMMA". If an examination performance consists of two parts (oral and written), you must register for both parts of the examination performance separately.

You can deregister from the examination performance up to 7 days before the examination date in"My EMMA".

You have the option of applying for a certificate or proof of a language module taken at the Language Centre. The prerequisite is that the module was taken as an elective module or facultative module.

There are two options here:

A language certificate provides information about the module, the level, the ECTS, the number of teaching units and the examination performance. Such a certificate certifies your language skills for applications of all kinds.

For some applications, for example for certain scholarships, a DAAD language certificate is required.

Issuing a certificate or proof is subject to a fee, which is currently €10.00. Please refer to the document for the application and payment procedure.

Modules and courses in the winter semester 2024/25

English as an entry requirement

Proof of English language proficiency is required for some of the degree programmes at HNEE.

If you do not have suitable proof of your English language skills at the start of your studies, you have the option of obtaining temporary enrolment and providing appropriate proof by the end of the first semester.

The following degree programmes require proof of English language proficiency at CEFR level B2:

The following degree programme requires proof of English language proficiency at CEFR level C1:

The international certificates TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and Cambridge English are recognised, as well as the B2 or C1 mark on the Abitur certificate. Further information on language recognition can be found on the page of the respective degree programme in the application section or from the General Student Advisory Service.

In the first semester, you can take an English module at B2 level at the Language Centre and obtain the B2 certificate by passing the examination performance.

Alternatively, you have the option of taking the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) outside the university. The Language Centre supports students in preparing for the TOEIC L&R. A preparation course is offered in the winter semester. This is free of charge for students. The TOEIC L&R can be taken at the inlingua Language Centre in Berlin. The costs, exam dates and registration deadlines as well as further information can be found on their website.

Please note that inlingua is your contact for the test. This applies to registration, the test session and receipt of the test result and certificate.

If you need the TOEIC L&R as proof of language proficiency for your studies by the end of the winter semester, we recommend a test date in November. The preparation course is coordinated with the November date.
