Obituary for Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. silv. Wilfried Perlwitz
The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) mourns the loss of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. silv. Wilfried Perlwitz, who passed away on 21 March 2025 at the age of 91. With his passing, we have lost an esteemed scientist, university lecturer and pioneer of forest-related research and teaching in Eberswalde.

Prof Perlwitz was born in Glogau an der Oder in 1933 as the son of a surveyor. After studying at the Dresden University of Technology, he began his scientific career in Eberswalde, where he specialised in forest surveying and photogrammetry. His research included the interpretation of aerial photographs and the recording of forest damage. Despite political hurdles and personal challenges, he remained loyal to science and continued his work with tireless commitment.
When the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences was re-established in 1992, Prof Perlwitz was appointed Professor of Surveying, IT and Mathematics. As the first elected dean of the faculty of Forestry (then Forest and Environment), he played a key role in the development of the university and was highly committed to the education of future generations. Even after his retirement, he remained involved in teaching as a lecturer until 2005.
His scientific achievements are reflected in numerous publications, patents and research projects. With his expertise, integrity and enthusiasm for forest science, Prof Perlwitz inspired and influenced many students and colleagues.
He will be remembered as a highly esteemed lecturer, mentor and colleague. His condolences go out to his family and all those who were close to him. His work will live on at the university and beyond.
