Nature Experience Areas in Berlin
Children and adolescents nowadays have less and less opportunities to gain independent nature experiences in their living environment. To counteract this deficiency, the concept of nature experience areas was developed in the late 1990’s.
Nature experience areas are large natural and “wild” free spaces for children and adolescents, in which they can play independently and unattended. The nature experience possibilities in these spaces include all forms of play, physical activity and tranquillity that rely neither on infrastructure nor on playground equipment. Playing in and with nature should provide enough space for interaction with nature and other children. Nature experience areas should have a minimum size of two hectares (one hectare in some exceptions) and be placed close to residential areas (300 to 500 metres).
