Biosphere Reserves Institute

The Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) is a scientific institute at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). It is made up of the following three departments: Forest and Environment, Landscape Management and Nature Conservation, and Sustainable Business. The main focus of BRI activity is the UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" programme and its designated model areas, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. In collaboration with BRI, HNEE intends to bring together the expert knowledge of all three departments mentioned above.

The BRI is comprised of three pillars:

  1. An international Master’s degree in Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM),

  2. a doctoral programme specialised in scientific work relating to biosphere reserves (in cooperation with Leuphana University of Lüneburg),

  3. a research group responsible for the identification and funding of research projects on biosphere reserves.

BRI is implementing the Innovation and Career Center’s (IKC) "Process Design for the Implementation of Biodiversity-preserving Land Use - Focus on Biosphere Reserves (ProBio-LaB)", which was approved and financed by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK) of the State of Brandenburg in April 2019. This was done with the aim of establishing biosphere reserves as a research focus at the HNE Eberswalde. However, the founding of the institute is independent of this funding and its work is set for the long term.
