Chiang Mai University (CMU) was founded in January 1964, under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It was the first institution of higher education in the north and the first provincial university in Thailand. Chiang Mai University is now a Leading University with Academic Excellence in International Standards, focusing to become a research-oriented institution of higher education and producing graduates with high moral and ethical standards, equipped to practice good governance under the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and Sustainable Development.

In the field of research, CMU has been launching innovative initiatives and development projects, the results of which are utilized to ever-advancing standards of teaching, learning and technology transfer, all for the sake of social and economic development of the region and, naturally, the country as a whole. CMU is also an established member of the ASEAN University Network. 

There are 20 faculty and 1 college in 3 disciplines: health science; technological science; and social sciences and humanities. Currently, CMU has 2,200 teaching staff and 36,912 students; 28,870 for Bachelor Degree; 6,694 for Master Degree; and 1,348 for PhD. CMU has 36 International Programs (7 for Bachelor Degree; 14 for Master Degree; 15 for Ph.D.), and 359 Regular Programs (98 for Bachelor Degree; 138 for Master Degree; 15 for Higher Diploma; and 70 for Ph.D.). At university levels, CMU has 140 Collaborative Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding with foreign universities, institutes and international organizations in 28 countries. Activities covered by these Agreements and Memoranda include academic collaboration, the secondment of thesis advisors and project consultants, joint research, faculty staff and student exchange, curriculum development, joint seminars, and information exchange.
