Library A to Z
Is a standardized formal specification about a publication. In the case of a book, these are, for example, title, author, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, number of pages, ISBN.
It forms the basic structure of every literature reference, bibliography or bibliographic database. The exact elements to be included in the bibliographical descriptions are determined by citation regulations in the scientific field and by special regulations in libraries and documentation.
Is the right to use an electronic service (database or electronic journal) throughout a university.
Access authorisation is usually controlled by the IP addresses of the computers from which access is gained. Since universities have connected IP areas, a database with a campus license is automatically activated for all computers connected to the university network. In addition, university members can access the products by dialing into the university server at home (VPN).
Individual work booths can be used by students and staff of the university for scientific work. They are located on the upper floors of the university library.
The carrels can be reserved at the lending desk for a period of 5 opening days. The period of use can be extended (in case of low demand) from 2 opening days before expiry.
The key can be obtained by handing in the GreenCard or the library card (deposit) at the lending desk. If you use the Carrel for several days, you can leave your working materials in the Carrel overnight. Carrels must be cleared on the last day of use.
Please let us know if you no longer need the carrels so that others can use them as well.
Electronic catalogue accessible to the public via the Internet in which the media holdings of a particular institution (e.g. a library) are listed. The catalogue lists media that a library makes available for use, usually with information on where and how they can be used. Library catalogues today are mostly searchable in electronic form as online catalogues via the Internet. As a rule, only independently published literature that is made available by a library itself is included - but not, for example, articles or documents that can be freely used on the Internet. In addition to the formal and thematic search for literature and its location, online catalogues usually also allow online reservation and extension of loan holdings, as well as direct access to electronic media in many cases.
- The OPAC is the online catalogue in which you can search the holdings of the HNE Library.
- You are welcome to use our introductory videos on the homepage for this purpose.
- Research stations are located at the entrance of the university library and at the entrances of the respective floors.
Rules that enable the unambiguous description and identification of documents. There are different citation practices in different scientific disciplines as well as at national and international level. There are also specific rules for citing sources from the Internet. Correct citation, however, always makes it possible to verify the accuracy of the information required for scientific work.
Example: In any case, the author(s), title and year of publication must be stated for books, for journals the title of the journal and year or volume and year of publication.
This is a special software for literature management and knowledge organization. It enables the administration and further processing of literature references, quotations and bibliographical references electronically.
Citavi offers the following functions:
- References found in databases and online catalogues can be transferred to the literature management program (direct import of data records).
- References can be transferred from the literature management program to your own files (direct export of data records)
- Source references can be formatted in common output formats
- automatic creation of bibliographies
- search options
- Input options for quotations and own comments
The link to the current version can be found here.
You can use the training offers (to use Citavi) of the university library.

More information about the team and accessibility hereRight to protect authors of literary, scientific and artistic works against plagiarism, unauthorised reproduction, distribution and making available to the public of their works.
This right expires 70 years after the death of the author or, in the case of several authors, after the death of the last living author, i.e. his work is then released for all types of use.
Copyright must be respected when reproducing and exporting literature and when further processing it.
Example: No chapter from a book may be reproduced and commercially placed on the market as an independent publication without the author's consent.
Are large collection of electronically stored data that can be retrieved by computer. In order for this query to be efficient, the data is structured into data records and data fields.
A database is the electronic form of a card index box. One can imagine a database as an extensive table. The individual data records then correspond to the table rows and the data fields to the cells of the table.
The licensed databases of the university library can be found here and are available for independent, free research on the homepage.
Access for university members from outside is also possible via VPN.
A system for identifying any document in a computer network by means of a unique name (comparable to the ISBN for a book). For each DOI, current information is stored on the designated object, in particular the Internet address at which it can be found. Even if this address changes, the DOI remains intact.
Example: doi:10.1371/journal.phone.0011273
A library that is not spatially available, but only intended.
However, a virtual library usually has the following features:
- a large collection of data
- Location independence through networking
- easy access due to uniform user interface
- Value-added services for the user
The term is used with pleasure in connection with link collections in the Internet and/or for Internet portals.
The ebooks of the university library are accessible via ProQuest Ebook Central.
Independent registration via the campus network is required. A specific search in the holdings of the university library is possible.
Journal published as a network publication. Electronic journals appear either parallel to a journal, which is also available in printed form, or exclusively electronically. Scientific electronic journals of all subject areas are listed in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
The e-journals of the university library can be obtained via SpringerLink or via the journal overview.
Is software that supports the
provision and use of electronic learning content and includes tools for
collaborative work and user management. It usually forms the technical
core of a complex web-based e-learning infrastructure.
In contrast to
teaching and educational content offered purely via the Internet, a
learning platform usually has the following functions:
- Administration and assignment of rights: administration of users (course author / course participants) and course content
- Tools for creating course content
- Communication (e.g. chat) and learning tools (e.g. notebook, calendar, bulletin board)
- Presentation of course content, learning objects and media in a network-compatible browser
- Evaluation and assessment possibilities
- Example: EMMA+
It is a database that records scientific electronic journals of all subject areas.
In addition to free, freely accessible services, users can also access journals licensed from their home library. In the case of unlicensed journals, it is usually possible to view the tables of contents and acquire articles for a fee directly from the publisher or, if necessary, via interlibrary loan.
You will receive information by e-mail on current loans (deadlines, reservations, etc.). This process is automated, i.e. if a system error occurs, you do not receive any e-mails.
News: changed opening hours (only limited), events (book flea market)
Use of the university library is free of charge.
If the loan period is exceeded, if special services are used (interlibrary loan and lockers), if media are lost or damaged and if the library card is lost, fees may be charged. Payment can be made in cash at the information desk. The fee schedule can be found here. The payment of fees is only possible until 18 o'clock. Not allowed in the university library.
Exception: Water in transparent PLASTIC containers with screw cap.
This is directly accessible and contains both borrowable media and media that cannot be borrowed (reference holdings).
The displays and notices with site plans and information help you find your way around.
In many cases, handsets are not kept in the library itself, but in institutes and chairs. This offers scientists* the opportunity to place literature that is important for their research at their workplace, either permanently or on a long-term basis.
Handsets are usually marked in the OPAC with "HA + surname of permanent borrower". If there is an urgent need, lecturers can be contacted directly to request a short-term loan.
Is an alphabetical index, e.g. names, titles, keywords in connection with electronic information media (e.g. sorted list of possible search terms, e.g. of keywords, keywords or author names).
An index helps to find the right search terms for the respective information medium as well as those terms that are grouped around a search term. It allows you to look up and select different variations (singular, plural, genitive, word compositions, etc.) of a search term and helps with uncertainties regarding the spelling of a search term.
Ability to identify information needs related to a particular problem, to identify and obtain information, and to evaluate and effectively use information.
The information competence offered by the university library is called InfoFit.This is a service provided by libraries to procure non-existent media from other libraries within the framework of interlibrary loan.
Media that are not part of the university library's collection can be ordered from other libraries. For this purpose, you can use the online interlibrary loan via the OPAC or alternatively fill out the loan form available at the information desk. The costs per order amount to 1.50 EUR and are to be paid immediately after ordering (also charged in case of non-delivery of media). For copies with more than 20 pages, additional costs may be waived by the supplier library. Loan extensions are possible, but require the consent of the supplier library. Please apply for this at the university library 3 days before the expiry of the loan period.
On request the registration is possible for groups from 2 to max. 20 persons.
Introductory events for first semester students may be announced by the departments.

Terms that appear in the bibliographic or content description of a document.
Keywords can only be searched according to their grammatical form, e.g. genitive, plural, in the template.
A keyword search is suitable as a first step in a search strategy. Here it can be useful to use placeholders as search tools.
This is the prerequisite for lending in the university library.
Students use their GreenCard and external users* and staff* are issued with a library card.
In case of loss, external users pay a replacement fee of 5 €. Students of the HNE please observe the regulations of the Student Service.
The Library Network is an association of libraries in a region. The KOBV (Kooperativer Verbund Berlin Brandenburg) is the library network for Brandenburg and Berlin. A joint catalogue of all participating libraries, the union catalogue, is produced. The libraries work closely together on many services (e.g. interlibrary loan).
If you have not found what you are looking for in the online catalogue of your own library, you can use the union catalogue to find out which other libraries in the region have the medium you are looking for.
Databases and electronic journals are generally not purchased but licensed for use. The publisher or provider grants the library or its users the right to access a database or the full texts of an electronic journal for a fee.
The rights and obligations of the licensor (publisher or provider) and the licensee (library) are regulated in a licence agreement.
The loan is booked at the information desk and can be made upon presentation of the library card or GreenCard. Media from the open-access collection can usually be borrowed for 4 weeks. Special regulations apply to the textbook stock, which is marked in red and is lent exclusively to HNE students.
Media from the magazine can often not be borrowed, but can be used to work in the library. These are mainly journals, old dissertations or media from before 1900. There are also media from the reference collection in the open access collection which cannot be borrowed either. These are marked with a yellow sticker and the inscription "nicht ausleihbar".
Current journals can be borrowed overnight or over the weekend.
For the safe storage of jackets and bags. They are equipped with deposit locks and can be locked with 1-Euro coins or chips (chips are available free of charge at the information desk). Please contact the library in good time to avoid any late payment charges.
(lat.) Designation, marking.
Symbolic (usually numeric or alphanumeric) short designation of a subject area (class) within a systematic representation of a scientific subject (classification).
Notations are mainly used to index the content of documents. They can be location-free, e.g. if they appear in a bibliographic database or location-bound as part of a signature, e.g. if a library collection is systematically arranged.
- Example: DK630/904/Bäu (904 is the notation)
Students can log in to the OPAC with their EMMA+ Log In data.
External users can log in to the OPAC with their date of birth (TTMM) and change this at any time after logging in in the "Change password" user data area.
Accounting type for the retrieval of journal articles offered in electronic form.
Via a subject database or the table of contents of an electronic journal, you can access the bibliographic description of the article, the full text of which is accessible via a link if you pay for the retrieval (usually by credit card). The prices for the individual articles vary depending on the provider.

Words or strings searched for in a database, library catalog, or search engine.
Documents or reference information in which the searched words or characters occur are output with the hit display. The search terms can be restricted to certain search categories and linked with operators.
References to texts, objects or facts on which a written version is based and which it may adopt in part. The indication of the source in compliance with formal citation regulations is of fundamental importance for scientific work and legally binding according to copyright law.
- Example: Gantert, Klaus (2016): Basic librarian knowledge. 9th edition. Berlin: DeGruyter.
Here you will find a guide to quoting.
A term that describes the contents of a document based on a standardized directory of terms.
Keywords are assigned by experts on the basis of a content analysis in compliance with agreed rules (e.g. RSWK = rules for the keyword catalogue).
Keywords offer the possibility to carry out systematic research on a topic, e.g. in a library catalogue or a bibliographic database.
Keywords do not have to appear in the document itself and therefore often differ from keywords.
Bibliography that comprehensively references the publications of a specific subject or scientific field. Subject bibliographies usually contain essays and monographs on the subject. Subject bibliographies are also increasingly published in the form of bibliographic databases.
- Example: "AgrarBibliographie" - a system. Compilation of the literature on the whole field of agriculture, forestry and food industry as well as the basic and auxiliary knowledge with papers.
It's the book depository of a library. The books in magazines are not arranged thematically, but according to access numbers (Numerus currens). In order to find a book in a magazine, you must first determine the exact location (signature) in the library catalogue. The magazine is not accessible to users*. Media from this area must be requested at the lending desk.
As a rule, the magazine is made available 2 hours after request. Orders placed after 3 p.m. or on Fridays after 12 a.m. will be made available on the next opening day.
All media that a library makes available for use and lists in its library catalogues.
