biomass yield model [bym]
biomass potential of arable land Sybille Brozio & Mirella Zeidler
The quantity of harvestable bioenergy depends on site conditions, cultivation intensity and cultivation aims. The estimation of biomass is realised by combining yield functions and crop rotation algorithms in a model.
Spatial data are visualised in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The algorithms are programmed in the system ArcGIS 9.x © ESRI and the programming language Visual Basic for Application.
Model input data:
site specific:
regional specific:
· arable land · annual precipitation · soil fertility ·
· demand of food · statistics of live stock · bioenergy sites ·
Results of modelling are potential annual yield maps of dry matter with following attributes:
- Definition of site specific crop rotations
- Calculation of crop yields including crop rotation impact
- Calculation of yields (dry mass) of by-products, harvesting residuals (straw, leaves) and roots
- Visualization of biomass potentials in several scales:
theoretical:
technical:
sustainable:
yield potential of crops and by-products (dry mass)
yield potential minus demand for food and fodder
bioenergy content of energy crops: biogas, bioethanol, biodiesel, synthetic biofuels
e.g. humus carbon balances, precipitation scenarios, energy crop rotations, yield increasing
