About us
We want to make the use of wood more sustainable. Our goal is to provide wood with special properties, making it even better for special applications. Our research extends the uses of wood. In practice, this also means conservation of resources, because less wood is needed for the same purpose. The use of wood in practice thus becomes more economical, more sustainable and has a high potential for innovation. We do research for that.
In order to achieve our goals, we conduct basic material research and materials development for the modification of wood. We explore the chemical and physical modification processes and combinations thereof. In order to find new possibilities, we deal with the physics of the natural and also the modified raw material wood. We are looking for improved measurement methods in wood physics because even finer, more detailed measurement results can show, for example, new developments in wood drying processes. We also study the chemical and ultrastructural properties of woods. In order to make profitable and sustainable applications possible in "real life", we are looking for wood technology-oriented process technologies.
In short, we want to make wood even better. That is our task.
Range of services
Our researchers carry out chemical-analytical, material-scientific and mechanical investigations on wood, lignocellulosic materials and polymers. For this purpose, we use special experimental facilities for the modification, drying and tempering of wood on a laboratory and pilot plant scale.
For investigations in the field of wood chemistry with chemical analysis we use:
- Helium pycnometer for true density measurements of porous materials (Porotec Pycnomatic ATC)
- FT-Medium Infrared spectrometer equipped for ATR- FT-IR (ZnSe crystal) and transmission FT-IR including sample preparation (Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS5)
- FT-NIR spectrometer, can be equipped with an iD1H heated transmission accessory or with an UpIR (from Pike Technologies) for large, solid samples (Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS5N)
- UV-vis spectrophotometer additionally equipped with an integrating sphere for analyses of solid samples (Shimadzu UV 2600)
- Transmitted-light and reflected light Microscope with heating plate, fluorescent unit and long pass filter (UV, Blue and Green, Darkfield and Brightfield) (Olympus BX-41 and Sony Camera)
- Digital Motorized microscope for 2D and 3D imaging and analysis; software for image acquisition and surface / roughness measurement (Leica DVM6)
- Sliding Microtome for the production of thin sections for microscopy (Leica SM2010 R).
- Dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) in controlled climate from -150 °C (nitrogen cold) to 500 °C. Tensile and bending clamps (Gabo Eplexor 25 N and 100 N)
- Differential scanning calorimetry equipped with an intracooler (theoretical temperature range: 85 – 600 °C) (Netzsch DSC 204 F1 Phoenix)
- Universal testing machine for small forces up to 2,5 kN, 3-point bending and tensile testing, modification for heated pressure stamp (TIRAtest 28025)
- Portable CIELab colour and 60° gloss spectrophotometer for solid colours (BYK spectro-guide 45/0 gloss)
- Accelerated Weathering Tester with UVA-340 nm lamps and water spray system (Q-Lab QUV/spray/RP)
- Stereoscopic 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation system for shape, deformation and strain measurement with Imager E-Lite cameras, laptop computer and software (LaVision StrainMaster portable 5M)
- Experimental modal analysis with 4-channel-frontend, uniaxial miniature vibration sensor, miniature impact hammer and m+p Analyzer software
- Table-top abrasion test instrument for paint and other coatings (Erichsen Taber® Abraser Type 5131)
- 3D Printing Devices (FDM/FFM- Printer for multi material filaments and SLS-Printer for PA- Powder)
Pilot plant equipment:
- Pilot Plant for thermally modified timber
- Vacuum drying kiln (lab-size)
- Self-built wood impregnation system, heated
- Laboratory hydraulic press, heated
- drying and climatisation technology
- Self-built small burning cabinet according to DIN 50050-1 (1986-04) and Burner according to DIN 50051 (1977-02) for B2- Tests according to DIN 4102-1
- Self-built pyrolysis machine for surface pyrolysis of wood samples
