The doctoral thesis conducted by Dr. Herold in cooperation between the Technical University of Dresden and the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development deals with wood chemical and wood technological issues in veneer processing. With the approach researched by Ms. Herold, veneers can be better formed. This allows, for example, tighter bending contours and lower defect rates for veneered components in furniture, interior design and vehicle interiors. The substance used for plasticizing - furfuryl alcohol obtained from natural substances - can be cured into a polymer after forming, thus permanently fixing the mold. In the future, this will result in a wide range of applications in the field of vehicle and home interiors, but also in engineered wood construction. At the same time, currently used binders based on fossil raw materials can be substituted by natural raw materials.

The work makes an important contribution to the improved use of veneers, which represent an important added value of forestry products. By substituting petroleum-based binders and using sustainably produced raw materials, a contribution can be made to the decarbonization of the economy.

DFG project on simultaneous Moulding and Shape Fixation of Wood Veneer by Specific Material Modification

UFO

Due to its chemical structure and structural anisotropy, the renewable raw material wood exhibits material-specific characteristics at the various levels (macro, micro, nano). Therefore, materials science investigations of lignocellulosic materials have to be carried out in the sense of a multi-scale approach on the different levels in order to obtain comprehensive knowledge about the structure-property behavior.

The aim of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the altered material behavior of modified woods and to clarify effective relationships between the chemical composition of the modified wood substance and the mechanical properties. The formability of veneers for the coating of surfaces or for the production of moldings is improved by a specific material modification. The background to this modification is the impregnation of veneers with furfuryl alcohol solutions, which forms furan polymers in the cell walls by temperature-induced acid catalytic reactions. For this purpose, the furfuryl alcohol solutions contain, in addition to furfuryl alcohol, at least one other substance which - reinforced by an increase in temperature - initiates the polymerization. The plasticization of the veneers to improve formability and the mold fixation are thus realized with the same chemical substance. The process steps of forming, mold fixing and curing take place in one operation. From chemical, physical and structural investigations, interrelationships are derived and their general validity and transferability to other wood species are estimated.

In the future, the understanding of the interrelationships of the modification process and the development of a process for the simultaneous forming and form-fixing of thin wood layers will lead to an increase in the range of applications for natural and sustainably produced raw materials.
